Black B12s

Post by Frazmataz »

Does anyone know if any of the B12s were in LNER lined or unlined black during the inter-war years? If so, any specific numbers? I stress that I do NOT mean wartime black

Off the top of my head (I don't have my Yeadon to hand) they were all green, including the Scottish ones.

Had a quick look in Yeadons, B-12 which were moved to Scotland came under Inverurie which for some reason didn't get any LNER green paint. So starting with 8502 in Dec 1935 put them into black, lined red - but as they were powerful locos gave them a double red line!

Hi Bass, I'm looking at a book called "LNER 4-6-0s A Pictorial Tribute" by Peter Swinger, published by Ian Allan 2002. In it it states (with reference to the B12 class "... LNER in 1928, but members of the class working in Scotland were painted black when they were shopped at Inverurie but with double red lining on the cab and tender sides..." Unfortunately there are no numbers mentioned.

If this book is accurate, I hope I've partially helped you.
