For what it counts, I usually run my model cab-first.

As small yard shunters, it probably didn't matter :-)

The front end was, I believe, where the coal bunker was

Sorry to disagree but the Sentinel shunters had their reversing quadrant clearly marked forward and reverse on a brass plate. When in forward they went chimney first.

Welcome to the forums, Steve!

It sounds like you have personal experience... ?

I got to take lots of pictures of the Middleton's example two years ago but it was in pieces. Good for pictures of the 'engine', but I didn't get to see any controls (which were probably in safe storage somewhere).

Thanks. Not much of an authority on things LNER but I hope I'll make the odd contribution, useful or otherwise.

Yes, I've been involved with the Middleton Sentinel (aka LNER 59, 8153, BR 68153 and Departmental 54) for far too many years. One day, we'll get around to rebuilding it but it's a fair way off that day, yet. The engine unit is done but the boiler and frames are still to be tackled.

I think it was Sheila who showed us around. The engine unit did look very good. She said the boiler was away for restoration, but it sounded like a low priority project for the restorer.
