I vote for the J21 everytime! Having been born and bred in Kirkby Stephen, and having had family who worked on the stainmore line, i have a paticular attachment to this loco and cannot wait to see her steam again, who knows maybe even visit Kirkby Stephen east!

I agree with wehf100 the J11. was a little cracker.

We had a few at Darnall and they were used on goods during the week but on Saturdays and Sundays they could be seen hauling seaside excursions and fishermans specials.

Firemen prefered them to our 2 K2s and the J39s we had.

Never let us down and always back in time for the passengers to catch the last tram home .

I would go for the J21, I remember visiting Beamish regularly in the late 1970's and early 80's and seeing it in steam.
I had the pleasure of a firing turn once and the two things that struck me were the dreadful design of the cab; the side windows were too low to see out of, and the seats built onto the cab sides made for a very narrow floor, and the other thing was the silent and effortless way that she moved despite being totally clapped out mechanically. A real beauty!
Then again there's always the J27..................
