The Universal loco

Post by jwealleans »

Quick question based on something I read yesterday (and if you read the same thing please let the thread run)..

Which was the only locomotive class to be allocated to all 7 areas (pre-1923 companies) of the LNER?

Are you just wanting just the Designation of loco for example 'A' or are you wan the full class of the locomotive e.g. A3, A4 etc...(if that makes sense)

I'm looking for a specific class of loco... I'll let you all ponder until next week.

Could it be the J39 of your own signature or whatever you call the locomotive class that appears beneath our user names? It must say somewhere but how do these come to be allocated?

The locomotive classes are "forum ranks". The forum software allows users to have rankings according to the number of posts. We had a vote on different themes, and I eventually chose one base on locomotive classes arranged by power/prestige from Y7 to A4. I tried to get a good selection of companies and types. The list is near the bottom of the third page on this thread:

Perhaps I should post that in a more visible place :-)

Thank you, I should have realised that. I am very happy being a Y7 and evoking memories of the North Sunderland Railway. I can see I might want to stick at, or move rapidly through, some of the other classes.

I think this is a trick question, and so I will guess the Ivatt Class 4 2-6-0.

I found the answer, which surprised me quite a bit, in Richard's locomotive pages, so I won't spoil it for others except to say that I was wrong.

I've just re-read my B1 page, and I think the source I used for the locomotive you're thinking of must be wrong?

When trying to find candidates, the former GNSR is the hardest to 'match' - but Thompson B1s were delivered to the GNSR lines.

I meant to post last night so apologies for my tardiness...

According to Locomotives Illustrated (and who am I to argue) it was the J72. So someone did get it very early.

Colombo, you have a suspicious mind. Where were the Ivatts allocated other than East Anglia?

JW,

I am a cynic.

A batch of Ivatt 4s was built in Darlington and we had them in the NE. After the closure of the M&GN, those probably were spread around, perhaps to GE and GN sheds. Then I thought they may have been useful in Scotland for pick up goods after the old 0-6-0s were withdrawn.

Yes:
In 1959 they were allocated to 34E, 55A, 53A, 40F, 50C, 65A, 64F. None to Inverness area though. It was just a guess.

I could easily have said 08 (?)

Here is a question on the topic of the universal loco.

Which ex-LNER shed had two WR pannier tanks allocated to it and why?
