DJR - I want one! Where is it from? Do they do N gauge too? Cheers!

Well, that makes two people working on 3D printed snowploughs. I'm doing the 1909 built, wooden framed trio (18-20), with a lot of help from Bryan:

Good Morning,

Thanks for all the interest in my snow plough!

I've made a couple of changes to the model since I had that one printed, here is my model:

Image

Image

I will make it available at some point, just please bear with me, I want to make sure it is right! I originally made the model just for myself as a challenge!

Shildonlad - Are you from Shildon? you're not far from me if you are, I'm from Teesside and work in Newton Aycliffe. I based my model on No 12 at the museum in Shildon as it was easy to get to.

Rlangham - I could certainly attempt to scale it down to n gauge, however I suspect you might lose the timber detail as I have drawn the min groove permissible for 3D printing for the OO version. I think the gap may look too big in n gauge! But its worth a try.

69843 - Looking good, let me know if you need any help/advice.

My model with transfers:

Does anyone have any info on liveries and dates. I have Ken Hoole's NERA booklet on snowploughs, it says after NER livery it was light blue then dark blue under LNER, then black then olive green. I wonder if any one knows of any photos of ploughs or other works vehicles in these liveries?

All the Best,
Dave

Looks excellent mate. The only question I have for the time being is how have you done the wheelbase? As I know 6w vehicles are hard to get around curves.

As to liveries, Bryan certainly can help if you PM him (if he doesn't find this before). In a 120pg document he sent me on the history of all the snowploughs, there was an excellent section on liveries. Certainly a great help for when I get around to having mine finished off.

I got a piece of metal tube 4mm O/D x 2mm I/D and cut slices off to make bushes for the wheels. I drew a space for the bushes to snap in, as you can see in the picture. It is a 4mm hole with a 3.75mm gap in the top, worked a treat! The centre wheelset has a recess either side to allow it more side to side movement for corners.

I'll take a picture of the underside of the prototype for you tonight when I get home

That's quite clever. I'd certainly be interested to see the arrangement in practice.

Under mine I'm going for a pivoting system of, essentially, W-irons to allow it to traverse down to Radius 2/438mm curves where needed. I'll try and get a screenshot later.

Edit: The underframe in place, both on a straight and on a curve of 438mm radius, and the chassis parts.

The central section doesn't pivot, just the outside two arms and there are weight pockets in both arms to help when being pushed around. They are designed to take Markits top hat bearings and 12mm, 8 spoke split-spoke wheels on a 26mm pinpoint axle.

Moderators - Are we ok discussing these models here? or would you rather I started a new thread in the model Railways section, I realise this probably isn't the right place!

69843 - Interesting arrangement. Do you know which material you are going to use? I used polymide, the cheap option for mine. Its quite hard and not very flexible, are you planning on snapping the wheelsets into place? Might prove a bit difficult if you are.

My snow plough goes round 2nd radius fine, I haven't tested to see just how tight it can manage.

Yes you should probably move to Model Railways.

This is all 4mm?

Very nice indeed.

I need to check the numbers , but I could be interested in a pair. I've got the Darlington pair for the late 1950's and the Kirkby Stephen steel pair to do. For those I was thinking a set of flat sections to act as a scratch build aid on a modded wagon frame using Dave Bradwell springing plates/Bill Bedford spung W-irons (P4 model, I'm afraid). How feasible would a pair be with a hollow underside to allow own suspension setups to be added?

I'll start up a thread in the next 24 hours for the modelling side but from Bryan's notes provided to me, from 1958 until 1972 18 and 20 were at Darlington.

18 and 20 were the last Timber ploughs after 1958 and spent time at Darlington.
15 and 16 I have recorded as being at Darlington until 1958. Alongside 18 and 20

Hi Bryon, thanks for all the very useful info!

I've started a new thread in 'Model Railways'
