Bilton Junction and Harrogate - Ripon line

Post by bilton »

Are there any photos out there taken at or near Bilton Junction on the Harrogate to Ripon Line. I am now 80 and living in Scotland. Spent my teenage years spotting at Bilton Junction and would dearly like to be reminded of this long lost line.

Bilton I don't know if you are aware of the fact that Alnmouth on the ECML was also once known in YN&BR/NER days as Bilton Junction.
Hi interested in the area served by 52D. also researching colliery wagonways from same area.

Interested to read your post about Bilton Junction, I too spent many hours there, including a box visit when signalman Bull was on duty (around 1960).
A railway colleague, Iain Dewar (two i) of mine took some colour photos ca 1970 before he joined the industry, and when the line was being dismantled, and the 5 pictures of the track recovery train show,
-from Bilton looking towards Starbeck and Dragon Junction
-Bilton signalbox with class 08 shunter, children on the walkway round the box which was used for cleaning the windows
-a silhouette shot of the train on Nidd viaduct taken from the bank
-the class 08 by Ripley Junction box which had served Pately Bridge
-Wormald Green station with the track being cut on site.
I hope these are of interest, attribution to Iain Dewar please

I would love to see those photos. I lived in Starbeck and as a 6 year old used to walk the line with my dad in the days it was disused and we watched the demolition trains. I can remember that the track bed from Starbeck to Bilton was ash ballast and old track in traditional chairs as it had been in use just for freight. As we approached Bilton junction it changed to stone ballast and the track was newer looking.
I remember one evening there was a Drewery shunter in Starbeck yard and a chap was working on it - think it had failed. We watched a class 40 hauled demolition train come off the Ripon line at Starbeck north and head back towards York.

I too would love to see more photos, as I too was a childhood explorer of this area after the line was lifted, gaining access from the Ripley direction in my case.
