Location question

Post by robertcwp »

Can anyone identify the location for this image, please? Information with the negative suggested it is between Grantham and Nottingham.

Robert, could it be between Saxondale Junction and Radcliffe? If so the train is heading for Nottingham.

As John says between Saxondale Junction and Radcliffe-on=Trent. I remember passing the long lines of stored 16 tonners on my way to and from Grantham.
This is taken from the opposite direction quite possibly from the bridge in the distance:

Later on the disused trackbed had concrete slab track installed and the down line slewed over so that trains ran on that. The slab base is still there.

Thanks for the confirmation 60156. Is the photo taken from the Oatfield Lane bridge?

I did wonder if the wagons were stored. 67779 only lasted another 3 months at Colwick.

Looking at Google earth, it appears that the picture was taken looking towards Oatfield lane on the bridge in the background. The bridge seems to lead to something called 'Hello Turtle' nowadays!
There were a load more stored wagons near The Hall signalbox by Nottingham Racecourse, presumably not being used for coal traffic over the summer months?

I would be looking at the nls maps link rather than Google Earth? The clumps of trees are the obvious point of interest in the background.

However, we are only considering a few furlongs, either way.

All the best,
