D49 62730 Berkshire

Post by neilgow »

Please find attached a B&W copy of a photograph of the 62730 in Helmsley station on the Gilling to Pickering line. Heading east to Kirbymoorside.

Original author unknown as is the true date but given the fact that the line closed to passengers in 1952, the photo could only be between 1948 and 1952.

Re 62730

The photograph shown was taken by the late Ken Cockerill and the date is 31st January 1953, two before the line closed to passengers on the 2nd February 1953. Ken and Jack Armstrong travelled on this train as it travelled to Pickering taking photos at the stations along the line. They also took turns at driving Jacks car so the could get shots from the lineside between stops.

Both of the photographers collections are now with the Armstrong Railway Photographic Trust

Thanks for that update, there was some confusion about the original photographer. I was led to believe that person was a Mr. L. Brown who died in the 60's and his collection was bought by Neville Stead who now owns the copyright.

I have an interest in Helmsley as my family lived there I travelled several times on the line from Driffield to Malton to Helmsley via Gilling. Mind you I was only four at the time. However I do remember the J27's and J39's that worked the daily freights and bagged a few footplate rides around the station and sidings.
