Drummond D50 (NBR Class P) 4-4-0T Tank Engines

Drummond adopted Wheatley's leading bogie design and successfully used it on his "Abbotsford" 4-4-0 Class. For operating the passenger services along the Clyde Coast, Drummond chose a 4-4-0T using the same bogie design to replace his own 0-4-2Ts which were then operating these services. Three of these locomotives were built in 1879 by Neilson & Co. No further D50s were built, although Drummond did build the smaller D51 4-4-0T in greater numbers. ​
The only significant change experienced by the D50s, was the fitting of G8 boilers by Reid in 1905. ​
Initially, the D50 class worked the trains between Glasgow and Helensburgh before being replaced by Reid's C15 4-4-2T tank engines in 1913. They then moved to Dundee, Eastfield, and Parkhead. By Grouping in 1923, No. 1390 was based at Fort William. No. 1392 was withdrawn from branch work out of Bathgate, in 1924. The last two remained in service until 1926.

Drummond D51 (NBR Class R) 4-4-0T Tank Engines

The D51s were the last passenger tank locomotives designed by Drummond for the North British Railway (NBR). A total of thirty locomotives were built in five batches between 1880 and 1884, including a final batch of six built by Reid. ​
Between 1908 and 1911, Reid fitted new boilers of the type he had already fitted to the Drummond J82 0-6-0T locomotives. ​
The D51 tanks were mainly used on the suburban services around Edinburgh and Glasgow, and on the various NBR branch lines. Early on, these also sometimes operated mainline stopping services. Nos. 10456, 10458, 10461, and 10462 were fitted with cowcatchers at both ends when working the Fraserburgh to St. Combs branch. ​
Withdrawals started at Grouping in 1923, and the last three D51s were withdrawn in 1933.

Always good to see more North British material; much appreciated.

I am intrigued by the reference to 1390's allocation to Fort William. Aside from the Atlantic tanks' workings to Arrochar, I never associated tank engines much with the West Highland, though I think I recall hearing of the use of 'R' class 4-4-0Ts on the IFAR. So what was the employment of the D50 No. 1390? Workings to Banavie Pier, perhaps, or did she venture further afield?

Regarding the picture of No. 494, I note that there seems to be a 4-plank wagon carrying loco coal on the right hand side. This is prominently lettered with an 'L', but also bears a North British quatrefoil. Is the 'L' part of the marking of a colliery company, perhaps one to which the wagon has been thirled, hence the presence of the quatrefoil? If not, what light can be shed on the markings visible in the picture?
