Buffer stocks

Post by Darwin4975 »

These were painted black on green locomotives in LNER days. Does anyone know whether this was true also before the Grouping. Also, were the wheels painted green?

Not sure why you have put this thread under 'Photographs and Videos'. This subject has been discussed several times under 'Locomotives and Rolling Stock'.

One thread, started by myself is ....here...

You can also use the search facility for 'Buffer Stock Colours'. The best way to do this (in my experience is not to use the 'Search..' box on the top right corner of the page, but go to the home page of for LNER.info and use the search icon on the antipenultimate line of the page. You will get a bit of unwanted stuff, but it does scan the forum most effectively.

Thanks, yes there is information here on buffer stocks but all of it seems to concern LNER. I too have searched through the various colour photograph albums and have yet to find a green LNER loco with red buffer stocks, whatever works it may have passed through so for green engines it seems that black was universal. The question really concerns whether this policy was instigated by LNER or had already been standard practice before the Grouping.

I cannot answer your original question.

But, black was not 'universal' for LNER green engines, if one takes into account post-war LNER green livery.
