Reid J88 (NBR F Class) 0-6-0T

I have a new collection of photos featuring the NBR F Class (LNER Class J88) was a class of 0-6-0 tank locomotives, designed by William P. Reid on the North British Railway. They were used for dockyard shunting duties
When the North British railway required more dock shunting tank locomotives in 1904, rather than order further copies of the railway's standard G class (LNER class Y9) 0-4-0ST , William P. Reid introduced a completely new 0-6-0T locomotive design
They were used on docks and harbours on both the east and west coasts of Scotland. They were usually allocated to St. Margaret's (Edinburgh), Eastfield (Glasgow), Thornton, Kipps, Polmont, Stirling and Haymarket (Edinburgh) locomotive depots.
At the grouping in 1923, they all passed to the London and North Eastern Railway, who classified them as class J88. They were all still in service at Nationalisation in 1948. BR added 60000 to their LNER 1946 number
One locomotive, No. 68341, was withdrawn in 1954 after falling into Kirkcaldy harbour, but later the class were gradually displaced by diesel shunters during the 1950s, with the last withdrawn in December 1962. All members of the class were scrapped

There is a very similar image (same locomotive 8325) at a slightly different angle in NBRSG archive.

The Leith General Warehouse wagons in background in both cases are the giveaway and interesting in own rite as not their usual haunt.

It’s undated and wrongly captioned as this is section between Granton Dock & Trinity Station in Edinburgh

After bit more digging it’s Lower Granton Road

Given background I surmise both taken minutes apart.

Think the image @DOCJACOB is referring to may be this one: http://www.edinphoto.org.uk/0_edin_t/0_ ... tm#picture. The locomotive's rods are in different positions in the two photographs under discussion, so some movement seems to have taken place between their taking. The LGW wagons seem to be standing on the main line leading from Granton Harbour, so does this illustrate shunting operations associated with the harbour?

Indeed it is.

I’m pretty sure only seen only 4 LGW wagons images not on the Edinburgh Sub or it’s immediate environs.

This pair and another near Hutchinson's on the Kirkcaldy harbour branch.

The other but I can’t 100% trace/recall was in Saughton area I think.

Sandy MacLean's book on the Sub devotes a full page to the LGW grain wagons, saying there were four variations of the design and confirming that some went to Hutchison at Kirkcaldy. Four of them, illustrating at least two of the design variations, appear in a photograph showing part of South Leith Yard in 1954 which can be seen at p.240 of Harry Knox' wonderful "Edinburgh St Margaret's": a gem that comes high on my list of favourite railway books. It's apparent from this work that, in addition to the Granton railway and South Leith, J88s found employment in the Gorgie and Duddingston pilot diagrams, the latter including a double-shifted turn at St Leonards at the top of the Innocent Railway. I also have an excellent shot from the W.D.Yuill collection of the yard at Leith Citadel with a J88 in the left foreground.
