Great photos Malcolm. No. 1 on the down slow just north of the old Stevenage station. You can see Stevenage North box in the distance. The other photo we usually see of this event is of No. 1 sat at the down slow platform in Stevenage station with 4498 sitting alongside in the down fast platform.

What's a bit odd though, is that although the shots of the film crew shooting the Aberdonian are said to be at Stevenage, the one photo shows them on a twin-track section, but the nearest section of twin-track would be 8 or 9 miles south of Stevenage, between Woolmer Green and Digswell. The only other possible explanation might be if there was extensive permanent way work going on on the main line, then trains would be routed via the Hertford Loop, but even that would most likely have been on a Sunday and I'm pretty sure the Aberdonian was not a Sunday working. Then again, the given date, 8th of May, 1934 was a Tuesday.

Also, in the other shot where the crew are sat at the foot of a fairly tall embankment, would be between Little Wymondley and Hitchin near the old mail pick-up post, 4 or 5 miles north of Stevenage. Not only that, but the locomotive is obviously on the line closest to the embankment edge, so that would be the slow line. Again, unlikely for a main line express.

More movie-making jiggery-pokery, methinks.

Oh, and somebody tell that bloke up in the window in Kings Cross that the entrance is about 40' below him. :mrgreen: :mrgreen:

Somebody wouldn't have been playing safe and done the filming under a possession?
I know it might sound a bit present day elfandsafetyish. but if you want a repeat shot?

8th May 1934 Cameramen on the railway track getting a shot of the 'Aberdonian' express train for the film 'Night Mail', directed by Herbert Smith. (Photo by Fred Morley).

If that train is going as fast as it appears there will be some damage done to body parts, or is the exhaust dubbed with Photoshop 1934?!

The Hysteria and Stupidity brigade would have a field day here.

train appears to be static unless someone is trying to leave the moveing train.[see behind the the film can on the camera]

Yep, probably an overlaid negative to get the billowing exhaust. The 1934 method of Photoshop.

Enough of accidents, Tornado, and...........(gulp)....(it's difficult for me to say)....diesels.
Here are a couple more images on the historical side (which may be useful for modellers, too).

what is the first veicle after the tender as it appears to have a chimney.????

Possibly a horse box with stove in grooms compartment?
Hi interested in the area served by 52D. also researching colliery wagonways from same area.

Malcolm - do you know where the photo of 2752 was taken? I saw (and photographed) Tornado from a road overbridge at Swayfield (nr. Corby Glen) a couple of months ago and the location looks quite similar. Would there have been four tracks there in 1929?
