I discovered this thread and decided to resurrect it many years down the line!
I saw the photo of the Heracles tracking and communicating with the Flying Scotsman and immediately thought I recognised the exact location it was taken, if anyone is still interested to know.
The photo I believe shows the pair at Carlton-on-Trent, I see the snaking of the river Trent at the top of the image and the point at which the roads fork and now join with the A1 (which was of course not built at that time). I grew up in the village and remember watching trains from the crossing area in the 70s and 80s. The picture is just south of the crossing, I was even able to see some of the paths of the hedgerows in present day aerial photographs even though many are now removed, although happily there is no industrial estate.
Great photo and it brought back many happy memories.
