Favourite Photos

Post by Malcolm »

I think that of all the photos I have seen in books, magazines, on the internet, in museums, and in my own collection, my two favourites are these. They remind me of times gone by, glimpses into the past recorded forever. Things that we all remember fondly, and the real reasons why we love the railways (for us older ones anyway). Because they were such an integral part of our lives: the hobby, the holidays, sitting on a platform with a bucket and spade, a time when people were more important (rose tinted glasses maybe, but still nice).

Except Sheffield (see above post).
Anyway back to rail related matters what class of loco is pulling Scotsman it is not LNER 342 as that would be a J26. Is the loco from an LNER constituent (GNR perhaps) that has not had its new number painted on or is the loco from another company.
Hi interested in the area served by 52D. also researching colliery wagonways from same area.

This is one of my favourite,s, Spike Island shunters cabin in August 1960, mainly because in the background you can see some kids swimming in the canal, that,s where we learnt to swim ,no fancy leisure centre,s for us, river, canal any old pond. After a hard day,s loco spotting we would be stripped and in there with the rest of them and you know something, even in winter the water in the canal was always warm, a strange colour but warm, isn,t allowed these days, poor kids, health and safety has taken away all the fun of growing up

Reminds me of the Tilcon limestone quarry just outside Knottingley-another nursery for aspiring swimmers.A bit of sun on the water and it turned a lovely shade of blue.Next to the Askern line too-great for young spotters!
