This was September 1979 and is a Consett to Redcar empty ore train (imagine the mess if they had been loaded) derailed at South Pelaw (not Pelaw South as I have seen in some publications!). 37053 leading and 37098.

Chop, Chop, Busy, Busy, Work, Work, Bang, Bang.
(Does anyone else remember that old "Penguin Biscuits" commercial?)

If I recall, the Tees men brought those iron ore sets quite a few times. It certainly stopped me from taking steel empties up to Consett!

More cleaning to be done (I'm going through a "Shine Grasshopper, shine...wax on..wax off" .... phase at the moment). No location given, but I'm sure it's Kings Cross shed.

Seems my memory is not as good as I thought it was. Yes, the commercial had penguins in it, but it was a "British Telecom" advert......not chocolate biscuits (must have been hungry when I wrote the post). See here for commercial:

It was a bit different when I went a'cleaning back in '65 at the Cross. Diesels - cab windows and floors only and only a matter of weeks before we were into the princely grade of 'passed cleaner'.

Blimey guv'nor, that must have been a bit of a rare occurrence, 4472 at Sarfend. Hardly the first choice of the motive power for a seaside excursion, I'd have thought. No wonder those two lads were so intent. I doubt they got to see one of the big pacifics in their neck o' the woods too often.

Wow! One year since the first photo in this thread (doesn't seem that long).
Here is another picture of "trough cleaning", this time (sorry) LMS, but a cool picture nonetheless.
Also, another cleaning picture.
