I think the best place to watch Deltics was southbound on the cliff tops at Spital pre electric days, you could hear them leaving Berwick, crossing the Royal Border Bridge then the engine note would fade as they approached Tweedmouth. After leaving Tweedmouth the note grew to a crescendo with acceleration until the beast was almost on top of you and with a bit of luck a long blast on the horns.
I cant remember the A4s 0r the NER Atlantics of an earlier generation doing this but it i bet it was just as awe inspiring.

Yes it was awe inspiring, as were southbound K3s or V2s leaving Tweedmouth Yard on a damp and slippery day!

The Deltics used to work diverted trains along my "local" line between Sunderland and Penshaw until 1966 when the curve into Sunderland station closed and I would have sold my soul to be old enough to ride or photograph them then.
