Post by TANFIELD »

Yet another Jack Armstrong photo in the care of the Armstrong Trust. NER (boarded up) signalbox at mystery location, poss south west Co. Durham area (Darlington?)...any ideas!

Trying to identify this signalbox (boarded up). New housing being built in far distance, had a suggestion of Darlington Area ...Barnard Castle line. Seems to be a road underbridge adjacent to cabin. An old siding to the left perhaps remnants of a goods yard. The box has characteristics of others that were in area e.g.Forcett Jct. Springfield, Richmond etc. Have the white print for Merry bent Junction and it sadly doesn't match.

If it narrows it down its definitely a late Darlington District or Central Division structure. This means in theory it could be anywhere from Skinningrove area to almost Penrith, however its not a stainmore line box, and i'm fairly certain that its not B'd Castle to Darlington either (not Broomielaw, Gainford, Piercebridge or Forcett) though am uncertain about Merrybent Junction. Is it somewhere in the Cleveland ironstone district?

THE SIGNALBOX IS BOWESFIELD WEST BETWEEN REDMARSHALL JCT. AND BOWESFIELD JCT. THE NEW (STOCKTON) HARTBURN ESTATE CAN BE SEEN IN THE BACKGROUND AND THE PARAPETS OF HARTBURN LANE BRIDGE. THE SIDING WAS ORIGINALLY PART OF A LINK CURVE TO JOIN THE LEEDS NORTHERN (LEN 3) JUST BEYOND STOCKTON CUT JCT. THANKS FOR VARIOUS HELP WITH THIS.
