Does anyone have any idea where this shot was taken, please?

3658, probably either during WW2 or shortly thereafter.

I think all I can offer is that there are likely to be two signal boxes not far away (Stop signal, and distant arm beneath it, in the distance, still 'Off' for the train); probably one not far out of shot of the left background, the other perhaps very roughly around 1/2-mile behind the photographer.

Could it be ECML southbound just north of Retford?

Here is an enlargement of part of the background if it helps.

There seems to be a prominent church or chapel.

It looks a little light on ballast to be ECML

I at first thought just north of Belford ECML but after further study what about somewhere on the GCR.

I don't recognise it as being GCR and the signals look wrong.

The loco was at Haymarket in 1947 - I don't have any earlier allocation information.

Looking through my collection i found this pic by Gavin L Wilson of a Dundee Edinburgh train at St Fort hauled by 955 in 1948. What struck me was the train formation. it seems as though the first pic shows a similar formation but heading in the opposite direction.

Since most churches are aligned East/West, that would put the track heading on
a slightly clockwise orientation from east/west. (WNW/ESE)
Assuming that it is a church in the background!
