Neil:sorry to be pedantic again, but looking at photo p2695652 of D9001 on 1A42 15.00 K/X -Newcastle. Deltic D9001 was named 19/7/61, but the subject of the photograph has the yellow warning panel which most of the deltics did not have from new and in fact many only received well into 1962. I think that only the last members of the class -early 1962 - may have had the panels from new. Looking at the external state of the engine in the photo I might hazard a guess that it may be one of Gateshead's and this particular train was often worked by a 52A loco.

Neil: Gateshead Deltics - if it is indeed a 52A loco- D9002/5/8/11/14/17. Looks like approx October to April looking at the trees in the photograph. All the NER Deltics received their nameplates between April and October 1963. I don't suppose you have an actual date for the photograph? Sorry, not much help I'm afraid

is taken from penny ha'penny bridge just south of Wymondley Siding. Other than the excellent main subject of the shot look at the sighting board on Stevenage North's up slow distant (40). Although by this date it is an upper quadrant the board is shaped for a sommersault.

Shows Stevenage North box diagram..

This is taken looking 'south' from close to what was known as 'Oxlease bridge' about 1000 or so yards south of Hatfield (Herts.) station.
This is a Down train, and the signals are Hatfield No.1 box's Down Fast and Down Slow distants, the higher of which had, above it (out of shot), a Starting signal for Redhall box.
