I'm fairly sure there were similar discussions when Bittern was first painted up as Dominion of New Zealand, so you're not the only one who thinks that. I've always thought that Mallard's shade of blue is too dark; I've seen photos of Sir Nigel Gresley in Garter Blue, and it too seemed lighter than Mallards coat.
I must admit though, Mallards colour is much more vivid than Bittern or SNGs Garter Blue, perhaps it's a ploy of some kind?

I think I'm correct in saying that neither of the three were repainted by the same company. Mallard was professionally repainted by BREL in 1986 (the signature is still there if you can find it) so is probably the most accurate.

Maybe someone should contact BREL and ask them about their research into garter blue. It's certainly something they wouldn't forget!

I think they did Green Arrow in 2006. She was certainly repainted at Doncaster works.

Yes, but don't forget the fact that Darlington completely cocked up the paint mixing for 4472 in 1968 (ish) and rather than say "OK - our mistake!" called it "Darlington Green."
And thus started a whole new argument! Lets not go there again please......
