Received these lovely images on old postcards this morning - would appreciate any further information on the locomotives depicted (aside from the ES1), dates built etc

E1 (later J72) 1720

Image

ES1 No 2 in LNER markings - still showing the change in profile of the handrails from the original bow collector on one 'nose'

rlangham has also sent these images to me off-list. I intend to add the J26 and the J72 to their respective loco pages. They were set at a higher resolution so I should be able to scale them without aliasing.

rlangham: If no one has found the info when I get to it, I'll see what I can dig up.
As usual, Yeadon's and RCTS Greenie will have build info; Yeadon's should have more detailed allocations.

Photos now up - thanks.

From Yeadon's...

J26 No. 1678
Darlington Works 484
Entered traffic December 1904.
Newport.
Middlesborough in 1925; Newport 10/3/1926; W.Hartlepool from 18/10/1943.
Renumbered 5748 in 1946; 65748 in December 1949. Condemned 15/1/1959 (Darlington).

Under repairs, Darlington 18/11-8/12/55 says "after collision" - so there might be a story there?

J72 No. 1720
Darlington Works 365
Entered traffic March 1899
September 1937: Vac.ejector fitted; heating apparatus fitted both ends; GS buffers&hook fitted.

Normanton.

Renumbered 8680 (7/4/1046) and 68680 (29/10/1949)
Condemned 16/10/1961; to Darlington for cut up 22/1/1962.

Thought the background to the J26 looked like Blyth or Heaton but after some discussions with others Newport seems to be favourite possible location.
Hi interested in the area served by 52D. also researching colliery wagonways from same area.

Thanks chaps, very much appreciated. Very pleased with both postcards, interesting in that they show both steam locomotives with smokebox 'darts' rather than the wheels which i'd usually associated with pre-grouping NER locos. That said, flicking through my scans of wartime North Eastern Railway magazines shows another P2 or P3 with the 'darts' as well
