LNER J72 'Joem'

Post by neilgow »

A photograph of the J72 in the long grass as it approaches Dunnington station on the Derwent Valley Light Rly in August 1979.

The DVLR ran passenger trains for a little while from Layerthorpe to Dunnington but weedkilling was not a strong point.

A nice picture of the J72 fighting its way through the undergrowth.

Weed killing was never a strong point with the DVLR; in WWII, the weeds were such that it was not visible from the air and this was put to good use by designating the line as an alternative route between York & Selby and for storing some nasty stuff such as mustard gas shells, there may even have been a factory producing the gas somewhere along the line, if my memory serves me.
