Strikes' me as one of Gresley's last steam design the V4s of which there were only 2 built it being the darkest days of WW2 round 1941. They were to be the prototypes one of which had a thermic syphon in the firebox, there were plans/orders to build another 10 once the first two had provided experiance. Those ten extra V4s were cancelled and the first ten Thompson B1s were built in lieu. As to which of the pair I couldn't honestly say. It's I'd say obviously a 2-6-2, a tender engine too rather than a V1/V3 tank and to small to be a V2.

3402, unofficially named Batam Hen had the thermic syphon firebox, but it had a habit of breaking stays and was rebuilt with a conventional firebox in 1945.
Its good to know where you stand. Saves making a fool of yourself later......

It is actually a copy of an official Doncaster photo of 3402 under construction. The original is very clear.

Yes I do know it is a copy, I am just trying to identify the pictures (most uncaptioned) contained in "railway related" family scrapbooks. This forum is proving to be the best way of doing that and it certainly brings up some interesting discussion & comments.......
