NER standard footbridge survivors

Post by Trestrol »

On the BR Tyneside Electrics Facebook site someone has posted a picture of theex-Percy Main footbridge in the NRM. It states over 50 were built. So that got me thinking in much the same way we did with the NER tiled maps, what survives. To start things of we have:-
NRM ex Percy Main
Goathland ex Howden on Tyne.
Pickering ex Walker Gate.
South Gosforth.

Also Haltwhistle and Brampton on the Newcastle - Carlisle line if not recently replaced/removed. Possibly others on that route - what about Hexham and Wylam, or are these deviations from the standard design?

Not sure if they are "standard" but survivors (when I last saw them) are Wylam, Riding Mill, Corbridge, Hexham and Haltwhistle. I have photos of these for those interested.

Wylam- No skeletal type
Riding Mill - Yes
Corbridge - No
Hexham - No skeletal type
Haltwhistle - Yes

So that gives us up to now:-
NRM - ex Percy Main
Goathland - ex Howden on Tyne
Pickering - ex Walkergate
South Gosforth
Garforth
Filey
Beverly
Cottingham
Wetheral
Ryhope- disused
Brampton
Riding Mill
Haltwhistle
Stocksfield
Haverthwaite- ex Cramlington
Beamish ex Dunston
Stanhope
Thorne North

So that gives 18 so far.

Stanhope and Beamish Museum - ex Dunston.
Although it's been a while since I last visited, the footbridge at Station Road, Billingham is viewable on Google Maps.

Unfortunately, the footbridge at the former Billingham Station site was demolished on Mothers Day last year, much to the annoyance of the locals. I don't know if it was offered to any of the preservation groups. :(

That's rather surprising. With the removal of the signalbox I would imagine some people will be tempted to try to beat the barriers (Pedestrians I mean) and the footbridge would have alleviated that a bit.
