West Ham South Goods Station

Post by WestHam10? »

My grandfather, Arthur Platman, who worked for the GER and then the LNER died due to enemy bombing in 1941. The LNER magazine says he worked at West Ham South Station. The pre-grouping atlas doesn't show a West Ham South Station. On the disused station website there is a map showing a West Ham South Goods Station on the branch line to Beckton. Does anyone know of any information about this station. The internet keeps returning information on the West Ham station at Manor Road.

Yes when I did a little stint as a secondman at Stratford loco during 1979 one day myself and a driver took a 350hp 0-6-0 diesel shunter on a diagram and travelled down the North Woolwich branch via Stratford Southern Junction box passing Stratford Market and Abbey Mills s/box (the current West Ham station wasn't open I don't think?) and stopped just beyond a trailing set of points a couple of hundred yards south from Abbey Mills s/box that were worked by Abbey Mills box and then we were routed into West Ham coal yard which from a very faded memory of 44 years ago after getting the red ground disc signal off we entered West Ham coal yard via a short entrance/exit line that curved around nearly 90% at a right angle to the North Woolwich line opening out into maybe 2 or 3 straight coal roads in amongst the mountains of coal and coal bunkers in the yard. I think after coupling up to a few coal wagons and a brake van we departed this coal yard and we may well have gone further down the Woolwich branch and ended up in Silvertown goods yard which we shunted and then probably took a train of mixed wagons back to Temple Mills eventually.

Hello WestHam10?,
There is a map in this article which surely shows the West Ham South station to which you refer, eastwood on the line to Beckton.

The complete article also shows that the area was severely bombed from 1940, which may be relevant to your quest.
"The (nearby Custom House) station was damaged during the start of the London Blitz on 7th September 1940."

All the best.
