The building of the oil terminal -fire risk- was given at the time C1963 as the reason for the ending of the use of V tanks down to TCQ. Though I think that one or two may in fact have sneaked through after the cut off date.

Some idiot who claimed to be from the I.R.A. tried it, he also tried to blow up the Redheugh gas tanks with much the same result.

A quick scan through my records show that I have worked TCQ with classes 24,37,40,46,47 and 55. I cannot remember any other than V3s in steam days.

There was a photo on Flea Bay not so long ago of an Ivatt "Mucky Duck" standing at the terminal with the stock attached, must have been a one off as I cant remember and there is nothing in my books about even seeing one of this class at the central.

Re: my previous post. The RCTS Railway Observer for April1964 corrected a previous statement made in R O February 1964, which had claimed that steam was barred from the TCQ branch, due to the line passing through the oil terminal. According to the April correction coal trains and traffic from the Quay was still hauled by steam engines, often J27s from Percy Main shed. Percy Main also provided a pilot at the oil depot and worked petrol tanks up to Percy Main for onward movement on two days a week. It would seem therefore that this was not the reason for the replacement of the V tanks on the boat trains, though it was the reason generally accepted at that time.

Quite a few sheds in the NER had them things, Blyth, Tweedmouth, Darlington to name a few they were used over Stainmore and other duties. Quite common to see them on the Shilbottle Oxwellmains coal train although they were steam id rather see a J27 or Q6 on this job.

I wonder if the Ivatt 4 'clodhopper' -is it 43129??? - in the TCQ photo is on an enthusiast's special. It looks fairly presentable amd this engine was used on a few such trains. An ex LNER driver on the GC when asked his opinion of these engines opined, "It's better than walking and that's about the best that can be said!" In the north east the general consensus amongst footplatemen seemed in the main to be one of dislike.

Update/: photo is possibly 43057 used on RCTS North Eastern Rail Tour 29/9/63 to TCQ.

I'll have a look in the NRM next time I'm in, which will be two weeks, as I'm away this weekend.
It may not be in a photographical position, but I will try, as I now have St Mungo, although, I'm missing one nameplate (both were missing, but one turned up on the floor!) and it's in early crest!
