Pictures added to the LNER Encyclopedia

I now have the pictures from my recent visits to the Middleton Railway and the National Railway Museum added to the website. There might be a few more coming in the next week, but these are the vast bulk of them.

These are from my visit to the Middleton Railway in Leeds.
I am very grateful to Sheila Bye, the Middleton Railway's historian for a personal tour of the locomotives and letting me take the above photographs.

Both the Y1 and Y7 were disassembled for overhauls. In many ways this was a bonus for the Y1 because it enabled photography of its unusual parts.

The Middleton Railway is currently in the middle of extensive building work, including a new visitor's centre that has National Lottery funding. The new centre is going to be a big place and will really help them tell the Leeds Story. Be sure to visit them when it opens in 2006. Their website is:

Nice to see they've replaced the big black block in front of the D17 which was there last time i went to York. The metal railings aren't much of an improvement either though, would be better if they had some sort of lower fence, if any at all (i'm guessing it's there to stop kids jumping under the engine

There was some glass or perspex or something like that all the way around, so you couldn't see the wheels/etc.
I'm guessing they had problems with kids jumping down off the platform and under the engine.

That isn't a good photo of the D17. I had trouble taking photos of many of the engines. Problems with light and obstructions. My Dad took a lot during the same visit, but he hasn't sent them to me yet. They might be better.

Hi Richard.

It is very likely that the perspex is there to lessen the chance of a visitor being injured, with a resulting injury claim. All organisiations that entertain the general public are having to put rules and barriers in place to cover themselves in these days of "where there's blame, there's a claim".
