M&GN Pages are now up!

Post by richard »

Thank you to Malcolm Peirson for writing the pages for the Midland & Great Northern Joint Railway section:

In unrelated news, I am seriously looking at using a Cloud solution for some of the resources across my various web sites. This will limit potential cost increases in the future, and improve global speeds. The LNER site will be a good place to try this, so I will probably start to implement something later this week in the NER section. So don't worry if there are some short hiccups with images/movies/etc in the NER section. I'll post a note when it is in place, then you can let me know if there are any problems.

I also thank Malcolm Peirson for the M&GN pages.
Further to these, I don't think that it is generally realized that part of the Norfolk and Suffolk Joint is still in regular use, Roughton Road Junction to Newstead Lane Junction. In other words, part of the connection from the GER Cromer High line to the M&GN coast line. It's all on http://www.old-maps.co.uk – but you will have to persevere with it!

The only mainline railway tunnel in the County of Norfolk.

Further to my comments about the Norfolk and Suffolk Joint, where the line passed under the approach to Cromer High station (GER) I believe formed (forms) the only railway tunnel in Norfolk. The western entrance is visible from the Cromer to Norwich road A149

I have just purchased a copy of BR Past and Present, East Midlands - from Ebay and looking through it I noticed a photo of Saxby Junction in Dec 1960 with a 9F and goods train coming off the M&GN heading west.

I know there were ironstone sidings a few miles down the line, and the train is loaded. Does anyone know if this was a regular working? I presume that the loco must have worked the empties tender first, because there were no turning facilities (except at Bourne and I'm sure that turntable - now at Wansford - is too short for a 9F).
