The K1

Post by Matt »

This engine wont be running for a long time due to a large crack in the firebox which goes below the frames. This means to fix it a boiler lift is required. Meant to be doing the last 3 weeks of Jacobites but 45407 will take its place.

Thanks for the update Matt, and welcome to the LNER forums!

Although it is home country for a K1 or K4, it always seems to be a Black 5 hauling the Jacobite when I'm in Fort William.

Actually 45407 was already up in Fort William when 62005's boiler developed a crack, 45407 was there to replace 61264 which travelled south the day after 45407 arrived at Fort William ( i was there to see it all :D ). 76079 has went up to Fort William to take the place of 62005, and i think 76079 and 45407 will tow "dead" 62006 down to Carnforth at the end of October
Thanks

Jonathon

Where is 61264 going now? Fine locomotive, would be nice if she went back to the Great Central Railway

I actually knew that, seen as i helped bring the 5 up, then was a member of the support crew for its 2 weeks of Jacobites. It was then supposed to do another 2 days running before the K1 took over to do the final 3 days of last week and the next 3 weeks. This was not possible due to the crack being discovered and 45407 is doing all of it. As for 76079 going up, I don't know where you heard that?!?!

That crack will have been there a long time and people were aware of it I think, not sure on the exact details but some of our guys examined it last weekend and it was subsequently failed. Then towed into the shed where 3 members of Riley and Son Engineering examined it fully to acertain the extent of the damage.

If you check the uksteam info website, it says that 76079 has went up (or is due to be going up soon) to Fort William
Thanks

Its not due to go up, its only going up if the 5 has some sort of failure. The 5 on the other hand is being renumbered to 44966 for the photographers charters.

The B1s at the moors, it failed with piston problems today and missed the Gala. It was meant to be doing the Whitbys tomorow but now 76079 will take its place.
