I haven't visited the forum lately, and have some catching up to do... Casting the memory back a very long way, I remember that there was talk at one time - early 60s, probably - of taking the down Cambridge line under the main line, though I should think it would have been much harder to do than the present scheme, given the terrain and disruption to the existing line. I certainly remember the huffing and puffing of crews and passengers waiting to clear the station and get to Cambridge, especially when you could sit at the front of the Craven DMUs and see it all.

It's been a long time since I watched trains at Hitchin. It was a great place for a while, with a busy steam shed, and everything from A4s and all the latest diesels on the main line, to the Midland 2F on the goods from Bedford, and the last E4 2-4-0 on the Saturday leave train to Henlow Camp.
