Restoration work continuing on this vehicle can be viewed at the upcoming open day to be held by RRNE at its premises on Hackworth Park Ind Est on 17th Oct 10.00 - 16.00

Thought I would add some shots of my plough under overhaul at Shildon.
Currently new oak beams to replace rotten existing timber are being installed.
Note the pile of ballast weights laid to the right hand side of the frame, these to be replaced on top of the frames but under the cab. This pile is about half the ballast weight.
Also the condition of the timber on the floor left hand side.
Main beams are 12" x 5" x 20ft

Have you anymore pictures very interesting . Is the body being restored as well?

Once the underframe is complete, the plan is to replace the ballast weights on top of the frame then replace the cab.
The next stage then will be to renew the plough slope and supporting timberwork.
Once this is done all heavy work should be complete. It will then return to the NYMR where all remaining general bodywork issues will be attended to at Newbridge before returning hopefully to its previous stabling point alongside Pickering Turntable.
The attached photos should give an idea of the state of the rot in the slope timbering.
The next stage then will be to renew the plough slope and supporting timberwork.

Thanks for the extra photos.
Its a bit of a mess!! Is it due to being stored outside or just old age? Are there any plans for it be used on a demonstration train without snow of course!!
I presume you will be putting it back into NER Livery?

Old age, lots of stress cracks from impacting into snowdrifts and resulting damp in the timber cracks.
Generally the body condition is reasonable, its the underframe and slope that took the pounding.
The only major discrepancy that may occur is in the orientation of the side skirts.
According to the General Arrangement Drawing for this plough the side skirts were made up of Vertical planking, however the skirts as they are now are Horizontal. I have not found any detail to date to indicate when this change was made or has it been horizontal from the beginning?
Livery wise it is intended to return to NER Indian Red but unlike the NRM plough 12 it will not have the red rear end. As I have not been able to find any trace of it ever being carried and according to another thread, the reason for it being carried was withdrawn before this vehicle entered service.
I would like to see it occaisionally, maybe in Northdale with an appropriate engine on the back and a dusting of snow possibly.
Maybe a certain museum curator in Shildon would let his out at the same time.

One little quibble.
It is a vehicle built and operated in the UK so it is therefore a Snowplough.
Update on work too date.
Completed wooden underframe reunited with its body last Thursday. So mobile again.
Just the Plough slope and associated support framing to replace.
All the ballast weights to refit then bodywork to complete after returning to the NYMR.

So does that mean there are two NER snowploughs at shildon then?? last time i was there there was one next to Green arrow. As that was in one piece and looking mighty fine I'm guessing that one was completely different

The plough in Locomotion is number 12 built about 1895 and has steel underframes possibly ex tender frames.
Whereas mine number 18 is at a workshop about a mile away and has wooden frames.
There is a 3rd plough which is number 20 stored at Beamish this is a sister to 18 with both built in York in 1909.

Latest news on the plough.
Number 18 arrived back from Shildon last night, being unloaded at Newbridge about 19.30.
All I have to do now is continue the bodywork repairs, repaint it and a multitude of other tasks as well.
But at least the frame and the plough slope is now in a condition where you can sneeze next to it and not be worried about it collapsing.
I will say that I am glad I took the option of sending it away to do the frame repair as the end result with the new frame is excellent, pity it is out of sight.
Why didn't I get an O gauge kit instead of the full size version?
A - Because there aren't any.

I think Medley might have a plough as well, although it is probably a different diagram.
