Hi interested in the area served by 52D. also researching colliery wagonways from same area.
Re: Waverley route first sod cut
It will be nice to see trains back on the old route, lets hope it gets finished. Our area has been prommised a Tees Valley Metro recently, no dout it will end up like the last attempt in the 1970's the CAT (Cleveland Advacned Transit) .

Once the line is established, perhaps it can be extended to Carlisle, if only to take all that timber currently going by road. There have been several fatalities caused by timber lorries shedding their loads, so there would be benefits all round.

Hooray! It, like many others, are way beyond the scope in real economics, of the bean counters of the times. Now, will the same apply to rtr Scottish prototypes? I doubt it because the bean counters who control the production have no idea how to sprout!

Not quite the first sod, but evidence of work finally starting at Galashiels:

Great-they're getting on with that-now for the NYMR to extend to Malton!!!!!
Bring back Ferrybridge station!
Re: Waverley route first sod cut
I'm sure I cannot be the only one that finds it ironic that a government minister is shouting out out what a wonderful opportunity for Scotland this railway will be, when a similar government axed the Waverley route in the first place
Beeching and Marples decided the route was de trop and uneconomic and here we are some sixty odd years later being told of a stimulant to the economy!
What a mad, sad world.

The success of the re-instated Edinburgh to Bathgate line in '86 undoubtedly led to the missing link to Airdrie being laid, so here's hoping the line to Tweedbank is eventually extended to Carlisle, double tracked all the way of course!

Re: Waverley route first sod cut
To be fair, the line was closed 5 years into Labour governments. Many, if not most, of the Beeching cuts took place under Labour. I think that Labour were being pressurised by trade unions supporting car workers to apply Beeching. It would almost certainly have taken place if the Conservatives had been in power, only the reasoning would have been different. A terrible shame to have lost such a route as it was for the Beverley York line.Beeching and Marples decided the route was de trop and uneconomic and here we are some sixty odd years later being told of a stimulant to the economy!

Yes, it was given a stay of execution of approximately 18 months when labour was in power in '67 but you'd have thought that the NUR, Aslef and indirectly the NUM would have had a lot more clout with Harold Wilson than the road lobby.
At the time of implementing Beeching, Wilson was alleged to have remarked in Cabinet on how the closures would affect Wales as "It would have worked out cheaper to give everyone in South Wales a new Cortina against keeping the loss making lines open".
Ever the economist was Harold...

Glad to see it's finally getting started would be better if it was rebuilt all the way to Carlisle But providing the line to Galashiels is a success theres always the chance it will be extended further south.
Interested in the NBR,LNER and shale works railways of central Scotland.
Re: Waverley route first sod cut
What a great thing, they should do more of this, we had a railway here and now its long gone, I had to take a long bus trip just to catch a train a few months ago
