J72 No. 69023 arrives at Tanfield

Post by P&JR »

J72 Class 0-6-0T No. 69023 arrived at Marley Hill on the Tanfield Railway yesterday. She will star at the September 11/12 Legends of Industry steam gala weekend.

First photograph of her at Marley Hill shed on Tanfield's official Facebook page.

We have two seperate accounts that No. 69023 spent a period on loan at Springwell Bank Foot shed on the Bowes Railway probably in the 1964/65 period. One from an ex Bowes driver the other from an equally reputable source. However as yet no paperwork can be found to back this up.

A second guest engine is due to be confirmed soon.

Home locos for the event will include the gala debut of Robert Stephenson 0-6-0T No. 3 Twizell plus 'Austerity' No. 49, Sir Cecil A. Cochrane and Renishaw Ironworks No. 6.

More details from Tanfield Railway's recently revamped website at www.tanfield-railway.co.uk

It looks really nice. I love the idea of an 'afternoon tea train', but a bit far to come for a day from the depths of Somerset I fear.

I must plan a holiday up there sometime.

If you've never been to a Tanfield gala you'll be in for a surprise. I don't think there's many railways that can compete in terms of what we achieve for our size (having said that we must have had over 120 volunteers signed in over the course of last years event!)

For example four seperate trains out on a three mile line, coal trains, mixed trains, a model railway exhibition, traction engines, vintage cars, classic busses, forge and vintage workshop demonstrations and guided tours... all adds up to a very interesting day and excellent value for money.

Things are moving forward rapidly now on the second visitor too so we're all set for a good six engine line up including of course Twizell.

We'll also be running a small number of extra evening specials with No. 69023... for more details visit our new look website http://www.tanfield-railway.co.uk

Still a few places left on the only chances to ride behind the J72 other than at the gala and in a full North Eastern Railway train at that with food included in the price... check out the railways website at www.tanfield-railway.co.uk/special.html FIRST SPECIAL THIS SUNDAY EVENING

Essentially what we're looking at is a full North Eastern Railway designed train featuring the superb J72, the fantastic clerestory composite we have on loan from Beamish, the fully restored NER 5 compartment third from the 1870s No. 256 and former directors saloon No. 853.

Spend an evening with the North Eastern Railway!

Lovely pic MrB.

She was still 'piebald' at Shildon coupla month's back.

I wonder again what's Shildon gonna replace her with, although I see Furness20 is going back (or already is?) to Shildon ?

60923 was at Shildon in steam giving brake van rides during 2010 same time as Tornado, the Furness loco ( replica from years ago ? ) was there time before that when I visited, also was the J21 looking like it was awaiting the burning torch !

I thought I was seeing double when I looked through, Mr B, here (Ihope) 's mine of 15 June last.

Also will try to put through two, one of each of her sides, taken on the day, probably the one you mention, 'Giants of North Eastern Steam' 2 May 2010.

Doubt whether they've had much chance to do her other side, but we'll have to wait for those old Tanfield boys to tell us ?

Yes, I try to spend time on composition but it's not easy when the hordes are milling about. These were taken during the a.m. 'earlybird' photo shoot but I still couldn't keep folk out of one of them. And they won't pose for you at 125m.p.h. either !

Cheers.
