The Class G5 Locomotive Company Ltd announced today that it had begun the assembly stage of the G5 locomotive, which was designed by Wilson Worsdell for the North Eastern Railway in 1893.
The locomotive is being assembled at the Rail Restorations North East (RRNE) works in Shildon County Durham. The frames, boiler, bogie and a number of castings were transferred in mid March from Great Northern Steam in Darlington, who had built the components under contract from the G5 Company.
The Chairman of the G5 Company, Dr Mike Wood, explained that this was a significant step forward for the project. Rail Restorations North East will be responsible for the detailed management of the assembly work, advised by the G5 chief engineer, David Elliot, who is well known for his work with Tornado.

Re: New Build G5
A welcome and very logical and useful addition to the ranks of LNER locos.
Re: New Build G5
Definitely a nice surprise after it all went quiet for a while - I would definitely make the trip up NLRB to see it in action as soon as possible, especially as it has been mentioned when the project was launched it will be in operation in NER livery, which adds a nice touch

Re: New Build G5
Certainly is good news. Perhaps this will spur one of the model railway companies into introducing the G5 in OO and N scales???

Re: New Build G5
An N gauge G5 would be perfect - I have the ex-Highfield Models one that requires a donor chassis in the meantime, but in N or OO gauge it's a very good sized locomotive, and not too far off from the M7 as proved on here!

Re: New Build G5
Warms my heart to see a G5 taking shape. Splendid little workhorse, easy to fire, quick to steam and a lovely curved tank end at the firemans side to lean back on and relax.
