LNER Magazine on DVD from GER Society
The Great Eastern Railway Society has invested in scanning the complete run of the all-line LNER magazine (from January 1927 to December 1947, 21 volumes and over 11,000 pages) and produced them as fully-indexed and searchable PDF files on a double-DVD, see here. Whilst GERS members will already be aware of this item, it is also available to non-members (ref: LNER) at a price of £15 plus 80p P&P from:
Barry Jackson
GERS Publications Sales Officer
14 Quantock Close
BEDFORD
MK41 9EW
(for enquiries please include an SAE or e-mail sales@gersociety.org.uk )
For those who are wondering why 1927 rather than 1923, it's because from 1923-1927 the NER continued to publish its own magazine, including the Scottish lines (NBR and GNoSR) and later incorporating the GNR and GCR magazines, whilst the GER also continued to publish its own magazine until December 1926. The introduction to the January 1927 issue confirms that it is the first 'all-line' magazine.
The Great Eastern Railway magazine is also available on DVD, as are a number of other LNER-period items (only some of which are restricted to GERS members), and a downloadable list is here.

Thanks very much. That does seem to be an excellent idea, and a decent bargain at £15.

I shall be acquiring a copy at the Ely show, where the GERS have a sales stand.
Re: LNER Magazine on DVD from GER Society
Will the NER magazine be available anywhere?

The copies that I know of are split between the NERA and the LNER Study Group. It's on my possible projects list to put forward to 'the powers that be', so watch this space...

I bought my copy from the LNER Study group (as I`m a member) and it`s a great buy, and fully searchable to boot. Definitely a must have.

Re: LNER Magazine on DVD from GER Society
Highly recommended - and addictive! Only had mine a couple of days and am dipping into them slowly. So far, I've learnt such diverse things as the facts that there was an LNER Building Society, the Laing showhouse outside Kings X station (surely one of the weirdest spots ever to chose to build a house) was used as a rest centre for HM Armed Forces, complete with a wooden hut next door with 20 bunks in it and the fact that Ernie Fitzpatrick, who was staying on over his time when I first went to GN House in 1967, was appointed Station Inspector (temporary) at Doncaster in 1940.
A topper is proper if the train's a non-stopper!

For those who are interested although not strickly about the named thread.
Langs detached 3 bed show house was built in 1934 on an island site in front of Kings X and was open between 10am and 10pm every day.
It was to show a type of house available in various north london estates, selling for approx £775. after several updates it ended it's days as a Salvation Army canteen for servicemen in WW2.
Also in 1934 Davis estates opened show houses in Vauxhall bridge and villiers Rd near Charing Cross station.
Langs later had show houses in Oxford St near marble Arch and Clapham junction.
They where built in these locations to attract local office workers.

Re: LNER Magazine on DVD from GER Society
This gives an idea of the kind of detail to be found in these publications - June 1941 issue
'In memory of Sir Nigel Gresley—In accordance
with the expressed wish that instead of flowers in
remembrance of Sir Nigel, donations should be sent
to the Railway Benevolent Institution, the sum of
£103 9s. 6d. has been added to the Funds.'
In those days, £103 would have been a lot of money.
