NER P3/J27 0-6-0 2392/65894 News

Post by Rlangham »

Saw the J27 boiler on this wagon outside Darlington carriage works yesterday - does anyone have any updated as to the state of play with the locomotive, ie is overhaul underway? Wish I had taken the chance to see it in service in NER livery when it was last in service

News precis: New cylinder block is being machined (old block was cracked and led to greatly reduced running in the last year or so of the previous boiler ticket).

You have to give it to the NELPG - they do keep their rotation going. I guess they have enough locos that there's always one being overhauled and they just keep at it without stalling.

From what I recall, in the last few years theres always been at least 2 locos under overhaul/repair. I love the NELPG and their machines.

Wonder if there's any chance of them doing up 901 again though...

Boiler hasn't changed much (at least exterior wise) last time I saw it - photo from today, and a snap of the 'Works Shunter'

2392 gets a bit of a display at NRM Locomotion Shildon - there's a couple of banners with the history of 2392 and the P3/J27's, and the restoration work being done on it. Also on display is the original cylinder casting and first attempt at a new one, which was faulty.

Original cylinder block - cracked and worn, hence the need for a replacement

The first new cylinder block - there were holes in it where the metal had not run into the pattern properly, happily another casting which was successful and will be used on the locomotive

Saw the Locomotion crew at the York Model Rail Show today, and they were asking visitors to write down their wish-list favourites for R-T-R production, timely as the MREMAG Poll went live on Friday.

They seemed to favour the G5 0-4-4T Project, but acknowledged that the J27 0-6-0 had also been highlighted by a number of visitors. I do hope that work will progress quickly on 2392, as would be great to see it back in steam.

Regards

I'd prefer N too, but of course the J27 is already made by Union Mills - I have the Highfield Models G5 kit which isn't perfect but hope to make it a reasonably static one
