Reinstatement of the Waverley Route

Post by 60041 »

The WRHA have published some new photos of the preparation of the trackbed of the northern section of the Waverley Route, so despite some minor spats about the proposed road layout at Falahill, it looks like some progress is being made.

Looks promising. They'll need to sort the drainage out, mind!

Ay up!

Interesting that, in such a harsh climate and after 40 + years of closure, there's still a soot mark on the bridge. I wish 'em success, I really do! :D
If I ain't here, I'm in Bilston, scoffing decent chips at last!!!!

Looks like they are going to be using new G44 sleepers going by 1 of the photos.
Hope they have the full set of handtools to fasten them to the rails.
Hammers are not allowed to be used, the flanges break too easily.

Would that be the concrete ones? I take it you need some sort of clamping tool to force the pandrols in then?
Its good to know where you stand. Saves making a fool of yourself later......

Yes.
Totally different from the normal Clip puller. http://www.pandrol.com/html/products/fastclip.htm
You need for a full set an Inserter, Lifter and an extractor.
However much better if you can get a machine to do it instead.
If you use a hammer to clip up the risk of breaking the flanges on the baseplate in the sleeper is too great.
The only method of fixing is to drill out the base and regrout in another. Expensive.

Some of our guys are NR engineers. I think they know what they're doing!
Still, we always need more hands so if you're up for it, why not join us? :)

Distance is a bit much and very much involved on the track at the NYMR.
I will be calling by on a visit sometime though.
Best of luck with the relaying anyway.

I was in Galashiels today and can confirm that the preparatory works are well advanced. The former trackbed alongside the A7 at Ladhope Vale is cleared and work is taking place to divert services and prepare the ground. The large building that stands on the trackbed next to the bridge at the bottom of Station Brae is all boarded up and ready for demolition.
It is good to see the old line starting to come back to life after all these years as a footpath, the day the line opens I fully intend to be standing at Tweedbank or Gala station with a ticket in my hand!

Hi,

I read with extreme interest this wonderful undertaking. I take my hat off to you Poms for being so stalwart about protecting your marvelous history for the next generations to enjoy. I’d love to shove in a sleeper just to say I contributed. Very exciting indeed.

Regards

Steve

Wonderful news. Perhaps they might think of "sponsor a sleeper" scheme.
Just an idea......

The latest news from the Borders, calls for a redesign of Tweedbank Station to accomodate charter trains, quite what 500 passengers will do when they alight at Tweedbank is another matter!
