Certainly beats St Pancras - the actual railway station, apart from Eurostar, is full of pretentious shops for several hundred metres, and you have to leave the original station to catch a domestic railway service
Author of 'The North Eastern Railway in the First World War' - now available in paperback!

Happy to help with anything relating to the railways in the First World War, just ask

Well, some of 'em aren't.
Although, have you seen WHSmith's prices on journey snacks? May have to revise the above comment....

I go through the place, and elsewhere in London, about five times a week.

Well if your train is delayed you can pop into Yalla Yalla and buy a quarter pound of Yalla's to suck on or visit Benito's Hat and, deal done, set it at a jaunty angle

The new West Side concourse open for business. I'm very fond of the GN and The Cross but I think this looks great - particularly when you think of how poor passenger facilities had been for decades before
A topper is proper if the train's a non-stopper!

All the publicity, and the promotional people who've been handing out info.and leaflets, all last week, have been trumpeting March 19th as the opening!

Or the main buffet where in the late 70's you could see the prostitutes doing deals with the drug dealers while the Bowyers pies sat under the hot glass for days on endMicky wrote:Is that it?.
I much prefer the old buffet on the suburban platforms selling a pint of Double Diamond keg beer and a B.R. cheese sandwich.
Happy days...

Re: The new look of King's Cross
I worked at the Cross for 48 years and remember the old days of the 60s & 70s when the place had a different atmosphere especcially at night when there were sleeping car, mail, parcels & newspaper trains, theve all gone now and the place is a little different to say the least. Times changed and with the really good job done next door there was no choice but to do an equally good job at Kings Cross, I was there last Saturday and you could see that they are well on the way to doing just that. If anybody has seen the film "the ladykillers" made during the 1950s then some of those scenes could easily be picked out into the 90s. It certainly has been a long time coming. Better late than never.

Re: The new look of King's Cross
I'm as nostalgic for the old days as anyone, and a lot of modernisation does leave me cold, but I have to say this new design for the Cross is a bit of a stunner - in a good way. In its modern manner, it does befit one of the great London termini. Job well done, I think.
