Re: LNER Heaven ?
I'll be going tomorrow (Saturday) I'm hoping to get on 4771's footplate
36C - Based out of 50H and 36F
Re: LNER Heaven ?
I am gutted I haven't been able to get the time off work to go.
Please take many, many photographs - who knows when we'll see a collection of ex-LNER locomotives together like this again!
And many thanks for the photographs already showcased - isn't the sight of two A4 Pacifics in garter blue with valances fabulous?

Re: LNER Heaven ?
Another couple of my photos. These beg the question, which shade of Garter Blue correct? Bittern's or Mallard's? Having always thought of Mallard as a reference, Bittern's looks too light to me.

Re: LNER Heaven ?
One very knowledgeable chap (sadly no longer with us) confirmed my thoughts when I first met him on Mallard - "too dark, not enough blue". That photograph of the two together more or less confirms that Mallard's colour is "wrong".
I'm not old enough to have experienced the real thing, but when people more knowledgeable by far than I, say one thing specifically having experienced the real thing at the time, and they all agree, I tend to believe them.
EDIT:
I do have one question - Bittern's wheels are painted up the flanges, Mallard's are painted to the outer edge and polished beyond that. Are both versions correct? I am looking at the photographs in my RCTS volume whilst at work and I'm struggling to recall.

Norfolkman,
I am horrendously jealous. God bless you Sir, I doff my flat cap to you and raise a pint of ale from my tankard.
A pleasure.

Re: LNER Heaven ?
Just realised something which has amused me.
I've spent a few months um'ing and ah'ing over the fact that the A4 de-valancing method I am using is leaving me with BR garter blue A4s but minus the very front hatch which had been added to the A4s by 1949 for access, just behind the curve of the smokebox.
So Bittern, with its hatches, is wrong for its livery with valances, and Mallard - which doesn't have them - is correct for that livery, because she was restored like that originally when withdrawn from BR!
Just goes to show that the minor details we pick out as modellers don't necessarily translate to the real thing.

Re: LNER Heaven ?
Bitterns Red looks much too gaudy for me.
Blue looks ok on both , Mallards a bit too rich perhaps? if you looked at them seperately I doubt if you would notice the difference.
Photos of Butler Hendersons Tender top if possible would be good , so we can see what is actually fitted !!

Yes, the DPS shed is open all weekend and the Deltic Simulator is open for driving sessions.
The following is the best I can do on Butler Henderson. Hope it shows the detail you want.
