Tynemouth Station Restoration
The on-going restoration of the canopies and roof at Tynemouth has nearly finished, I was down there a couple of weeks ago and it is looking good.
Today's Guardian has an article about it: http://www.guardian.co.uk/uk/the-northe ... sfeed=true

Re: Tynemouth Station Restoration
Amazing! But I wonder how much they'd have saved if they hadn't let it rot in the first place?
Re: Tynemouth Station Restoration
Looks beautiful, I hope more stations get attention - Moor Street has also benefited from TLC in recent years and looks stunning

Wow, that is truly stunning - many thanks for posting.
We have an amazing architectural heritage and should look after it.

Re: Tynemouth Station Restoration
Ay up!
At first glance I thought that was a Midland Railway station.
Wonderful and nice to see that someone is now appreciating heritage.
Now, surely there's some more lovely old stations needing a similar treatment?

Here's my shot of a DMU waiting in the bay platform to go to Newcastle in 1980 http://www.flickr.com/photos/pinzac55/3 ... 3387439295
and the same place in 1991 http://www.flickr.com/photos/pinzac55/3 ... 387439295/
BTW notice that in the 1980 shot half the roof is covered in Asbestos which considered similar to Plutonium nowadays hence it's removal.

Re: Tynemouth Station Restoration
I have just found a collection of photos of the completed work here:
http://www.fototime.com/ftweb/bin/ft.dl ... ent=stored
Its looking as good as new, its just a shame that there aren't any proper trains any more, I know the Metro provides an excellent service but wouldn't it be nice with a B1 sitting in the bay with an excursion from Hawick or Gala like they used to have!

Re: Tynemouth Station Restoration
Worth visiting on a Saturday morning when the Fleamarket is on, you might find some railwayana.

That should be on everyone's agenda for a visit when in the locality. Truly beautiful - thanks for posting the pics/links.
Some old repro LNER posters would provide the finishing touch!

Has anyone got/seen a photograph of an excursion train in one of the bays at Tynemouth?60041 wrote: . . . wouldn't it be nice with a B1 sitting in the bay with an excursion from Hawick or Gala like they used to have!

I have a photo of an LNER electric unit leaving the south end bay but it's copyright.
BTW there's a nice thread on the station HERE http://www.skyscrapercity.com/showthrea ... 389&page=6 with several useful photo's.

Re: Tynemouth Station Restoration
Thanks. I am specifically interested in excursion traffic (i.e. beyond the loop and therefore non-electric) because I am intrigued to know how (and how much) the bay platforms were actually used.PinzaC55 wrote:I have a photo of an LNER electric unit leaving the south end bay but it's copyright.
Re: Tynemouth Station Restoration
I seriously doubt that the bay platforms would have been much used for excursion trains. If the south end ones were so used they would need crossovers to release the engines and I think they would mostly be used for the Riverside trains.
If an excursion came from the Newcastle direction I think it is more likely it would run through to Monkseaton and be stabled in the extensive carriage sidings there.
