RAILFEST AND THE OLYMPIC TORCH

Post by WOOTANG »

having just recieved a news letter email from the NRM mentioning that 46115 scots guardsman will be pulling the olympic torch a stage where 4472 flying scotsman should of been carrying out

HOWEVER due to unforseen maintenance 4472 has had to pull out

NOW THE QUESTION IS OUT THERE?

the olympic torch train is june 20th with railfest 2-10 of june

SO THE QUESTION IS WILL 4472 BE MAKING AN APPEARENCE AT RAILFEST OR WILL THIS MAINTENANCE WORK MEAN THE LOCOMOTIVE WONT BE ABLE TO APPEAR

what do you all think AND what do you all think about 46115 pulling the flame

The question of 4472's 'unforeseen maintenance' is the subject of its own thread.

I can't tell you how utterly unmoved and disinterested the rest leaves me.

I'm sorry but the Olympics doesn't really grab me at all. However, forcing myself, it should be a loco of stature, well known to the public. As you have to rule out Mallard and Flying Scotsman, there's only one other really - Tornado!

Of course using Britannia would probably offend too many people!

After that.... who cares?

it ran today behind 8F 48624 on the trail/rehersal on the GCR along with their 'pullman' set of coaches from Leicester to Quorn before going back on the road. Interestingly the flame was 'transfered' to a gold plated loco lamp for its journey by steam

G'Day Gents

I just knew the 'Elf an Safety twits, wouldn't allow a living flame inside a carriage, should have had somebody hanging onto the smokebox door

Says who? Symbolically, surely a loco lamp is the next best thing to the actual firebox? (which would take a long time to get started if it was lit from the flame!)

I guess certain tabloids have become bored of blaming everything on "political correctness gone mad" so now it has to be "health and safety gone mad".

Not wrong there Richard, plus blaming health and safety is a great excuse used by many to not do something through lack of effort, or avoid problems due to failings on their own part - would be interesting to know how many of the signs at various museums around the UK that declare you can't do something because of 'health and safety' actually have any relation to the truth...

Ay up!

From watching the report, it looked more like a Miner's Lamp of the Davy Safety Lamp pattern to me.

Why it was described as "Specially Designed" beats me. They're sold by the gross in Souvenir shops.

the olympics are going to be fun if H&S get involved

plus i agree with 2002earlmarishal we need 70000 britannia to pull the train
or an A4 that is mainline certified
(EDINBURGH - KINGS X) non stop with bittern and its double tender
what a sight that would be

I am sure that I am not the only one to be thoroughly underwhelmed by the olympics, apparently the torch procession will come within view of our house but I will not bother to go out and watch some emaciated middle aged man who should know better stagger past with a chrome stick.
Now if it was on an A4 doing a non stop run, that would be rather a different matter........

Ay up!

60041, may I be forever associated with your comments. I wouldn't bother to look out the window is it passed, even if we do live in a cul-de-sac!

Hmm - an A4 doing a non-stop. Now THAT's more like it!!

in all fairness i dont really care about the olympics its just the fact the flame is travelling by steam on a stretch of the ECML

and as for the A4 non-stop i think it would be one of the big events of the year if it happened
60161 TORNADO is doing a run of 'THE ELIZABETHAN' but it is diesel hauled on the out trip and TORNADO on the return

but 'THE EIZABETHAN' was renowned for being a non-stop train
so why does tornado have to stop at 3 stations on the return

Never mind the troughs; the tender doesn't have any pickup gear in the first place!
