Interesting views from the NYMR on reconnecting Pickering with Rillington / Malton:_

Actually, this just restates the position that has been held for many years. Whilst on the face of it a restored Pickering-Malton connection would be desirable, there's not much along the route, other than Flamingoland, and given the lack of parking near NYMR stations already, a 'Park & Ride' facility for there is pretty much a non-starter. As for through trains, as the article states, you either operate at 25mph as now, or you have to have a massive upgrade of the line. This would be very costly and would destroy much of the atmosphere of the NYMR.

If, however, someone wanted to restore the link as a new, separate, operation, & perhaps use Pickering station as an interchange, well that's a different story...

However even in BR days the linespeed was not much above what is in place now.
Max 40 in a small number places I seem to remember, the rest was about 30.
That was with Cant in excess of the current max of 150mm / 6"

I have tried various realignment schemes on the NYMR and it is not really possible to get much of a speed increase within the double track formation.
Over the years we have eased curves as much as possible but there is not much chance of any significant speed increase if the proposal came to pass.
