NYMR GRant for Whitby Station Development

I'm surprised that no-one has drawn attention to the fact that the NYMR have been awarded £800,000 by the Coastal Communities Fund towards the reinstatement of Platform 2 at Whitby. This comes on top of £600,000 already pledged by other organisations, and means that the NYMR has the full amount needed. Some of the money is due to go on enhancing heritage aspects of the station, and work is expected to be complete in time for thje 2014 season, allowing the NYMR to run five departures a day from the station, in place of the current 3.

Good news indeed, if ever a station was crying out for a bit of TLC, it is Whitby.
It does make you wonder though, how much BR, and later, Network Rail saved by removing the track in the first place; surely it can't have been as much as it is costing to put it back?
Are there any plans to reinstate the double track as far as Grosmont sometime, or are the NYMR intending to continue the track sharing for the forseeable future?

There are no plans to reinstate the double track, but as uage of the lat few miles of the line increases there are hopes that installing a loop at Sleights might be the next item on the agenda to increase capacity between Grosmnt and Whitby.

Very interesting - Middlesbrough has also received a heritage makeover over the past few years, albeit that the return of the roof may be some way off yet! The result has been the removal of the 1960s office block above the station, and refurbishment of the original Victorian buildings.

Now what chance a heritage run from Teesside to Whitby and back? Guess that the current tracks are for light rail only, but would any heritage locomotive be possible, anf am thinking of the G5 project on this?

Would guess that Battersby Junction would also be something to address

No reason why not - Class 8 locomotives can already operate from Middlesbrough to Grosmont, and there is still a loop at Battersby. Indeed the NYMR operate some services between Grosmont & Battersby on occasion.

In fact, RTC were hoping to send their 30th March 'Wansbeck' railtour, which is top & tailed by the K1 & K4, all the way up to Whitby, although sadly that part of the tour has been caped due to pathing restrictions :(

British Rail probably saved a fortune by removing the track. Whitby still had a complex track layout, all bullhead and semaphore signalled , mostly probably life expired and worked from a box which I would guess employed 2 shifts a day! When you see the cost of a modern set of motor operated points or colour light signal it is eye watering. Regrettable, but given government under investment in BR, inevitable.

Well Beeching did close Whitby to Scarborough and Whitby to Malton and I believe he also wanted to close Whitby to Middlesbrough? I don't believe in being charitable to the man or to the governments (Tory and Labour) who respectively hired him and carried out the closures.

Nor me. It was a short sighted decision that has condemned us to traffic gridlock. Funny how there's always money for road "improvement" but never any for railways.

Of course, could it be that the oil giants are dictating Transport Policy?
