Lack of news on Bittern's 90mph run

Post by workev »

Folks,

Is it me? I expected to see lots of coverage of Bittern hitting 92.5mph between Grantham and Newark on Saturday; but all I can find is the Yorkshire Post!

Has anybody found anything else?

Ian

Unfortunately not - there are plenty of videos with predicted speed, but in most cases speed was deceiving. From my footage, I only clocked her at 70.8mph at the Southern border of Doncaster

It was noted from an onboard timer using GPS that 93 mph was run for a period through Newark, this was posted on a ECML yahoo group but i havnet seen any other posts or confirmations. I also have searched the various groups etc.

From that and my timings, hovering around 70/71mph through the yards at Doncaster, steady at 71mph by the Southern end platform boundaries and topped at 73 by the Northern platform boundaries :)

Good Morning,

I thought the coverage was OK. The BBC picked it up at a national level - here's a link to the web-page:

There was a brief mention of it on BBC radio 4s 1:pm last Saturday news with the loco being referred to by the female news reader as ''The Bittern'' and she went on to say that the steam engine looked simular to the record breaking ''The Mallard'' amongst afew other facts mentioned she went on to say that permission had been given by Network Rail for the steam engine to travel at 90mph.

I found the Nat Pres thread very good with the on board commentary and short film clips.
Link previously given.
I was quite surprised by the lack of any real comment on here about it though.

Also in Yesterdays York Press was this piece, not strictly of Bittern.

In case the word has not got out yet there is a gathering of all 6 A4s in York at the NRM starting tomorrow.
I will be there will you?
