Fantastic, first saw these in 'Get Carter' and wanted to visit ever since learning they're still around

Good news, I also thought they had all gone years ago.

Most of the staithes have gone of course.

I think this is the last survivor? I believe I walked the length of it during the Gateshead Urban Renewal Garden thingy (I forget the exact name) in the late 1980s? In those days it was a complete length.

The last fire which split it into two was 2-3 years ago iirc.

In those days there were claims that it was the largest wooden structure in the world.

As mentioned above the north & south staiths were restored by Gateshead Council in the mid 1980's as part of the lead up to the NGF90 National Garden Festival which was held during the summer of 1990- I had the pleasure of 5 years working on this site.
I believe the scheme was funded by English Heritage who placed strict restrictions on who could, or could not access the staiths after the Festival.
I have memories of carrying out a three point turn in a Land Rover on them and getting closer to the edge than intended.....
It would be good to walk along them again.

I never went onto Dunston staithes but had plenty of visits to North Blyth. They were someplaces to be with a cold winter easterly wind off the north sea. The staff were a special breed. I still have a Straithes staff rule book somewhere

Amble staiths were quite interesting and seldom recorded and they too were notoriously cold with a wind coming from Russia just especially for you. I have a few odd shots including a couple where the wagon looked to want to go on a sea voyage after dropping through the staith end.
