Queensbury Tunnel

Post by Sniffer »

On Look North just a few minutes ago.

Sustrans and a local group are pushing hard to get the tunnel refurbished as part of the Great Northern Cycle Trail.
If it comes to fruition it will be the longest subterranean cycle way in Europe.

No trains, but it would at least a give a feel for what the route once was.

G'Day Gents

They will have to spend a lot of money, the Halifax end has been under water for many years, approx half the tunnel is now submerged, Queensbury tunnel was a very wet tunnel, during cold spells, a loco was rostered to run backwards and forwards through the tunnel, to stop large icicles forming, I do wish them the best of luck, it would be nice to see it reopened.

Talking about icicles in tunnels, coming down from Penistone early Monday morning we had the front Pan' taken off by one in the Thurgoland tunnel.
