Goods shed doors

Post by Cutter »

What colour were goods shed doors painted in the mid 1930s? I am modeling Welwyn North c1930 and assume it not to have been repainted since GNR days. Light stone for shed woodwork, paneled office doors light and dark stone, but what about the doors to the shed itself, light or dark stone?
Many thanks

I'll be interested to hear what is considered to be correct, as mine are painted brown, as per various parts of station woodwork in the pre-1937 scheme. That was because those I'd seen in available old monochrome photographs of the appropriate type appeared dark.

I wonder if some were simply of dark creosoted timber, or coated in some sort of tar?

Were outside and inside finishes the same?

What a thought, lovely little Welwyn North modelled in Massachusetts. (Just the right distance from my home for an out and back stroll after Sunday lunch.) But I am way too young to have any recollection of the paintwork.

You have a greater modelling problem though. The petite yard was shunted by horse. (There's a 1930's photo of a horse dragging a wagon between the platforms on the up line.)

I know that photo well--the horse is Tom, who "retired" in 1947, and his handler was Charles Halls--no idea who the lad on the platform was. Wagons were placed in the yard by the stopping freight trains twice a day, blocking the East Coast Main Line for 10 minutes or so as they did so. Tom did the small shunts. My layout will basically be a roundy roundy, not a shunting layout.
I grew up in the area, lived in the valley below the station for a while, and commuted from it for a few years. Took it entirely for granted and never appreciated what a great station it was in it's day. Now a shadow of it's former self. Sad.

The 1930-1937 painting scheme for Goods Sheds was essentially the same as that for station buildings. Shed doors were Dark Brown, equating to (present day) BS381C:412, see https://www.e-paint.co.uk/lab-hlc-rgb-l ... 381C%20412
Between 1923 and 1930 shed doors were Light Brown. Repainting occurred at least every 5 years.

That's good. Mine can stay dark brown. Thank you.
