Although known as 70 degree solder, I believe that if we are being pedantic it may be 73 degrees, give or take, and I'm told that rather than being true solder it is technically "eutectic metal" :? (So what?)

Erotic metal !!!!
Is that what Rob P built his 'tart tank' from a few months ago?

All Solders are eutectic. All it means is that the melting point of the alloy is lower than the melting point of any of the constituents.

Another day another project, actually this is one of my favorites, Gresleys 01 2-8-0, I built this engine back in the mid 80's and had it running on the Southampton Model Railway layout, one running night, but it drew so much power that everything else stopped, but they had one of those new fangled 'Codar' controllers, it didn't bother my old 'Duette', although it had Romford gears at the time, and after a decent running session I would find brass on the running plate, as the gears wore out, so it was in for a rebuild, with Tri-Ang gears, and it runs well !!

For the last 12 to 15 years she's sat in a box and slowly fell to pieces, I know it's got Tri-Ang valve gear, modified from an old Princess and some bits from an A3, but it will pull 30 wagons with ease, I could probably hang on a few more but I've never had the room.

The body is made from plastic, the boiler is a bike pump, the smokebox door, is from an A3, chimney-B12 and backhead from Seagull

First thing I have to do is refit the cylinders and valve gear, then I can put the body back together again, Here's a few pics.

I'm almost always fascinated by "vintage" scratch-built locos (unless they are absolutely dire) as it is good to be reminded of what could be achieved even in the days when availability of ready-made parts and suitable materials was not what it is now, and there was no convenient dissemination of knowledge and skills via high quality specialist publications and via the internet.

It looks a good loco for its day! Had I built that in the eighties I'd have been quite pleased with myself.

Hi all
I like the O1, as I fancy building one. I wondered about the Nucast O2/2 with modified footplate and new chassis with lengthened valve gear. however, your loco may lead me to better ways. Keep it up

I have to say that given the boiler is a bike pump, that body really does look the part.

Well done.

You might do worse than to consider use of some or all of the Comet Stanier 8F motion for the Gresly O1......

Bit of an unusual prototype, the O1, and always over shadowed by the O2, Graeme, I did think about upgrading the valve gear using the 8F valve gear, I'll keep what I've got for the moment though'

Earlswood Nob, I used a 'GEM' 0-8-0 chassis, it's a bit short, but that was about the only thing available at the time.

So far tonight I've managed to refit the cylinders and valve gear (sorry no pictures) now for the body !!

Ay up!

I have to agree with Atlantic - there is something fascinating about old scratchbuilt stuff. I have two, built in the 1960s. A Crab and a Compound (sorry - no LNER!).

I can post piccies if you're interested....

Always, BB...............I wonder if the fascination with old scratch build stuff, is because we're heading that way ???? and need some replacement parts :P :P
