Gresley (converted) Restaurant Cafeteria Cars
I am looking for information about the series No. 9202 - 9214.
All I have to hand is that in Harris.
I intend to attempt to build one using a suitable Hornby donor and whatever I can get my hands on, sides and parts wise. I know Comet don't do theses sides but have not checked elsewhere yet!
Any information will be gratefully received, especially about sources of pics or plans.
Many thanks
Phil @ 36E

Have a dig through the old RMWeb, Phil and you should find a thread by Neil Ripley (Rippers) on converting one from the Hornby model.

If you want the others and can find enough information, I can produce the sides for you.

Re: Gresley (converted) Restaurant Cafeteria Cars
Hang on, has someone a list of these conversions?
Harris gives the numbers as 9209-14, the OP as 9202-14 and CWP shows us photos of 9216 & 9217.
Were 9202-14 conversions from ambulance cars and 9215-7 from D.11 as per Harris? or is the another explanation.

According to Bishop:
9200-9205 were RTP ex-FO
9206-9208 were RTF ex-FO
9209-9214 were RCAF ex-SLT (Ambulance Train Staff (Enlisted) Cars) from MEDLOC Train C - Hoek van Holland - Villach 1947-1954, fitted with BS gangways as RCAF
9215-9217 were RCAF ex-RU (Ambulance Train Kitchen/Mess Cars) from as above.

Re: Gresley (converted) Restaurant Cafeteria Cars
Thanks Bill and Co. + Rob; very helpful. I'd only seen the second one of those pics on Flicker when searching.
I am actually now doubtful about these running on the SR, despite being converted at Eastleigh, as a Trains Illustrated article from Sept '1953* would seem to suggest otherwise. I am waiting for my copy* to arrive from fleabay.

Re: Gresley (converted) Restaurant Cafeteria Cars
Some were allocated to the SR and even carried green livery - there is a published colour photo of one in green - possibly in Eardley Carriage Sidings. I have also seen a photo of one in crimson and cream on an inter-regional train in Kent.spamcanphil wrote:Thanks Bill and Co. + Rob; very helpful. Re: Gresley (converted) Restaurant Cafeteria Cars
Again according to Bishop:
On 'demobbing':
-> M9209 1/55 -> cond 13/61 (4 weekly accounting periods, hence 13 in a calendar year)
-> M9210 7/54 -> SC9210 5/55 -> cond 13/62
-> M9211 9/54 -> S9211 5/55 -> cond 12/62
-> M9212 7/54 -> W9212 ?/?? -> cond 10/63
-> M9213 7/54 -> S9213 5/55 -> cond 12/62
-> M9214 7/54 -> E9214 ?/?? -> cond 12/61
All the above Sleepers had a previous LNER number before transfer to the WD late 1943-mid 1944
Note that the two transferred to the SR during 1955, not the '1953' date of the magazine article.
-> M9215 11/54 -> SC9215 5/55 -> cond 13/62
-> M9216 12/54 -> SC9216 5/55 - cond 13/62
-> M9217 13/54 -> W9217 ?/?? -> 7/64
These last three Kitchen/Mess Cars went directly into WD service in 1944

Re: Gresley (converted) Restaurant Cafeteria Cars
Some years ago someone on the continent sent me a scan of a photo from a book (albeit very poor) of one of the repatriation trains in Holland. The Gresley vehicles looked tiny behind the continental loading gauged locomotive.

Plate 40 in 'The Southern in Kent and Sussex' by Terry Gough (OPC) shows a Wolverhampton-Margate train at Minster in 1960 with a crimson and cream Gresley cafeteria car second carriage in the train behind Schools 30932 Blundells.

Re: Gresley (converted) Restaurant Cafeteria Cars
Now we have got something to work on. Thanks you all very much indeed. That posted pic of the W example also shows the roof arrangement and that is very useful (Thanks Robert)
S9211/13. Cond '62 (OK for my era). BRSR Green with exterior panel 'reinforcements' as shown in the Harris LNER Carriages Volume. P88.
That will do for me...... and Mr Bedford has the sides (ordered). In fact Mr Bedford has all sorts of very useful sides for 'main stream' and 'unusual' LNER (ex LNER) stock.
Mr Wright will attempt to source a suitable Gresley Sleeper with turnbuckle, however I have some spare turnbuckle etches lurking somewhere
All I need now is the motivation to get off my butt and get on with it.

Re: Gresley (converted) Restaurant Cafeteria Cars
Very nice set of etched sides (for S9211E or S9213E) from Bill Bedford have arrived today. Looking forward to getting them prepped, shaped and then hacking up a Hornby donor.

The Gresley series of restaurant cafeteria cars were built by the Great Northern Railway between 1923 and 1924. They were based on the "Gresley" design of passenger car, which was used by many British railway companies in the early 20th century.
These cars were used for dining purposes, rather than as regular passenger coaches. They were designed to seat 40 people, and each car was fitted with a small kitchen, a servery and a dining area.
The cars were originally built with wooden sides, but subsequently the wooden sides were replaced with metal ones in the 1950s. The cars were eventually withdrawn from service in the mid-1970s.
Unfortunately, there is limited information available about the Gresley series No. 9202 - 9214, as these cars are no longer in service. However, there are some resources you can use to find out more about them. The National Railway Museum in York has a collection of photographs and plans of these cars, which you may be able to access. Additionally, the Railway Preservation Society of Ireland has a website which may contain further information.
Good luck with your project!
