I am going to need some more MJT bits at the York Show.

An alternative to the milling machine would be to use riffler files, or remove all the of the door between the outer frames and replace with plasticard scored with planks. I think someone used to do a white metal version of the early LNER van door, I cannot remember who off hand.

The machine does the job nicely, but one wrong move.....

Adrian (ABS) did those doors. i have a pair somewhere.

Will that machine take a complete van body? If you can mill the vent out neatly from between the end posts, the Bachmann van suddenly becomes a much more flexible model. It would need something like that as you can't file it out without damaging the roof (unless you're much more of a craftsman than me).

The clearance from the milling bit to the table is just less than 60mm, if anyone does a slightly shorter shank on the mill one might get around 70mm clearance, the former dimension is certainly not enough to clear a van end-on.

I wonder if it would be possible to set something up on the ML7 lathe?

I am guessing you mean the Bachmann 38-375 version?

That's the one. If they'd made the vent removable it would have been so much more useful.

I think these might be the door castings mentioned above. If memory serves (this would have been about 40 years ago) I bought them with the intention of using them to replace the doors on the Ian Kirk kit, which weren't entirely convincing. However, the castings have the extra timber at the bottom of the door, which I suspect was a BR thing - I've never seen a photo of an LNER-liveried van with this modification.

I had not noticed the extra plank at the bottom of the door of the ABS cast. I have found mine, they came in packs of 4 from ABS, code 507 possibly. The extra plank is there on the photo of E161026.

I am out of etched W irons so the D16 is on hold.

All this talk of milling machines and other machine tools makes me feel very comfortable with the relatively inexpensive range of files, small sharp chisels, scrapers, heavy Stanley knife, razor saw, piercing saw and various drill bits that constitute my tool kit for this sort of job.

I agree with you Graeme. In fact I've only recently bought a Dremel and so far have only used it to cut motor shafts.

Moving on, another project needs progressing, a D&S North Eastern clerestory. I have decided to use Mike Trice's method of 'teak finish'

Undercoat applied here.
A lot of work has been done on the sides, bolections around the windows, door frames added to the lower sides. I am taking inspiration from Mike's Dynamometer Car, as that is a painted effect, the finish will hopefully turn out to be similar.

Progress on the NBR fish van. Red primer on. The roof is not fitted on yet.

I hope to have a few models ready for Scalefour North next month.
